Saunders-Roe SR.177
The SR. 177 was the product of research conducted during the 1950's to provide the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy with an interceptor powered by both a rocket engine and an afterburning jet engine. This combination of engines meant that the SR. 177 was able to accelerate and climb very quickly and also had a high maximum speed. A number of other countries expressed an interest in purchasing this plane including the Canadian Air Force and the German Luftwaffe. The plane never saw full production though, in 1957 the UK government changed policy and cancelled their orders for the plane. Following this other countries began cancelling their orders and instead began ordering the Lockheed F-104. It emerged later in what became known as the 'Deal of the Century' that Lockheed with Ricard Nixons aid had been bribing senior political figures and generals in various European countries to get them to take the F-104 instead. The F-104 had a very similar appearance the SR. 177 but that is where the similarities end. The F-104 was only jet powered and was very poor at flying in bad weather, something which caused it to become known as 'The Widow Maker' amongst German pilots. |
